In June 2021, I set out to trace the outline of Slovenia with a bicycle, riding as close as possible to the country’s border and documenting the entire journey through film and photography.
Ride overview:
// Distance
1.585 km
// Elevation gain
29.500 m
// Total time
9 days
// Location
Slovenia, 80 municipalities (10 regions)
This was not just a ride, but a combination of endurance challenge, visual storytelling, and full-scale production project.
Cycling Challenge
The goal was simple in concept, but complex in execution:
ride the full contour of Slovenia.
The route followed the border as closely as possible, often leading onto gravel roads, forest trails, and steep sections where riding wasn’t always possible. Some parts briefly crossed neighboring countries to maintain flow, but the intention remained clear, to draw the shape of Slovenia with the bike.
This was a multi-day endurance effort:
// long stages
// constant elevation
// changing terrain
// unpredictable conditions
Instead of a classic self-supported format, the project had a family-supported approach. My wife and son followed the journey, helping with logistics, food, and support — which added a completely different dynamic to the challenge.
At times I rode solo, at times with friends and family joining sections of the route. The project became not only a physical challenge, but also a shared experience.
Documentary Film
The entire journey was captured by Vihar Media Production, following the ride in real time.
The film documents:
// the physical and mental demands of the challenge
// the contrast between difficult moments and pure enjoyment
// the landscapes of Slovenia, both iconic and hidden
Filming a moving target over 9 days was a challenge on its own. The crew followed the route with multiple vehicles, cameras, and a drone, often trying to keep up with unpredictable timing and terrain.
The result is a documentary that blends:
// endurance sport
// personal story
// visual exploration of the country
The Project
Contour Slovenia was designed as more than a ride.
It was a concept-driven project:
to physically trace the country’s border, its “contour” and turn it into a story.
Slovenia has become a global cycling nation, but this project approached it from a different angle:
not performance, but connection to landscape, movement, and perspective.
The project combined:
// planning and route design
// physical execution
// film production
// photography and storytelling

All built around one idea:
drawing the shape of a country with a bicycle.
Impact & Exposure
Contour Slovenia didn’t end with the ride. The project continued through screenings, media appearances, and public presentations.
// EXPO 2020 - Dubai (Feb 2022)
Pre-premiere screening, where I also shared the stage with Tadej Pogačar. He watched the trailer and shared his thoughts on the project.
// Local pre-premiere - Ĺ entjernej (Mar 2022)
A special screening in my hometown, supported by the local community, followed by a discussion with the team.
// Official premiere - Novo mesto (Jun 2022)
Hosted at the cultural centre Kulturni center Janeza Trdine, with guest Bogdan Fink.
// Additional screenings - Krško & across Slovenia
Multiple screenings and project presentations.
// Media & interviews
Featured on Kofirajd podcast, Tour of SLO, runda.si and interviewed on Radio Krka and more.
// Film festivals & presentations
The film was submitted to festivals and presented at selected events.
Partners & Support
Contour Slovenia was supported by a mix of individuals, brands, and local partners, each contributing to a different part of the project.
Key contributions included:
// Performance & preparation – bike fitting, testing, and nutrition planning
// Equipment & logistics – bike, gear, and bikepacking setup
// Route design tools – mapping and tracking solutions
// Local & community support – municipalities and regional partners
// Experience & storytelling – locations, hospitality, and project context
Main project partners:
The general sponsor of the sports documentary was Mr. Franc Bogovič, Member of the European Parliament. We are pleased that Mr. Bogdan dFink, the organizational director of the Tour of Slovenia, also showed his support for the film.
Alongside them, the project was supported by local communities, collaborators, and individuals who contributed both technically and personally throughout the journey.
Thanks to everyone!
